Bangladesh: Facts & Stats

TRANSPORTATION

Central to the country’s transportation system are networks of waterways, roads, and railways.

Roads:

Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is the state-owned transport corporation of Bangladesh. Total Road Length = 20,947.73 Km. BRTC operates three international bus lines. Inside Bangladesh, it operates inter-district bus services. It also operates intra-city bus services in many major cities of the country.

National Highway = 3,478.42 Km

Regional Highway = 4,221.52 Km

Zilla Road = 13,247.79 Km

Railroads:

Bangladesh Railway, a principle transportation agency of the country, is a Government–owned and Government–managed organization. It covers a length of 2,855 route kilometers. Two-thirds of the track was meter gauge, and the remainder was broad gauge. Many districts of the country are connected via railroads.

Most rail lines in Bangladesh run from north to south, following the north-south river system, and many freight and passenger journeys include a combination of rail and water movement. Bangladesh has some 3,630 rail bridges. A major road-rail bridge at Jamuna opened in 1998 to connect the previously isolated east and west rail networks.

The Hejaz Railway (also spelled Hedjaz) was originally built to transport pilgrims from the city of Damascus in Syria to the city of Madina in Saudi Arabia.

Waterways:

The primary transportation system of Bangladesh is its extensive inland waterways. The navigable waterways vary between 8372 kilometer during the monsoon to 5200 kilometer during the dry season. Some 18.9 million tons of cargo (about 21 percent of the total) were moved by water transportation.

Inland transport is mainly operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC). Bangladesh Shipping Corporation reportedly had twenty-one oceangoing ships in its inventory and the ships of many other nations called at the major ports.

Traditional and modern means of water transportation meet at the seaports of Chittagong and Chalna, where most of Bangladesh's imports and exports are transferred between dramatically different kinds of vessels.

Aviation:

Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) functions as the regulatory body for all aviation related activities in Bangladesh. There were eighteen airports in Bangladesh: fourteen had permanent-surface runways. These are Dhaka, Barisal. Chittagomig. Comilla, Cox' s Bazar, Ishurdi, Jessore, Rajshahi, Syedpur, Sylhet and Thakurgaon. Of these, the airports at Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet serve international routes.

Zia International Airport, twenty kilometers from Dhaka, serves as the national air transportation hub; the Patenga Airport at Chittagong, Sylhet Osmany Airport, and the airports at Jessore, Rajshahi, and Rangpur also are important flight centers. Biman, the national carrier, links all major towns with and cities with Dhaka. Recently, some private airlines have also started operating between Dhaka and other cities.
